Calming your nervous system
How can I calm my nervous system when I feel stressed?
Start with a few minutes of comfortable, unforced breathing. Sit with your back supported and your feet on the floor. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Count from one to five each way if that feels comfortable, and continue for about five minutes.
You do not need a device to try this. Follow the NHS breathing exercise for a step-by-step guide.
Can I calm my nervous system instantly?
Give yourself a few minutes rather than a deadline. You may feel some relief during a breathing exercise, but no method can promise an instant result. Avoid forcing deeper breaths to hurry the process. Return to normal breathing if you feel light-headed or uncomfortable.
What helps calm nerves naturally?
You can try breathing exercises, guided imagery, or progressive muscle relaxation, which involves tensing and releasing muscle groups. Choose an approach you find comfortable and practice it as part of your routine.
Regular exercise and support from people you trust can complement relaxation practice. You can compare the options in the NCCIH guide to relaxation techniques and NCCIH stress guidance.
How do I calm my sympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system helps you respond to stress through the fight-or-flight response. Relaxation practice aims to help you settle after that response. Comfortable breathing and focused attention are common starting points.
You cannot tell which part of your nervous system is active from a feeling alone. If symptoms persist or interfere with daily life, ask a healthcare professional about them. See the NCCIH stress guidance.
Can I reset or repair my nervous system naturally?
“Reset your nervous system” is a common wellness phrase for feeling calmer after stress. It does not establish that you have repaired nerve damage or treated a neurological condition. Use relaxation practices to support everyday wellbeing. Ask a clinician about ongoing symptoms or suspected nerve problems instead of relying on a reset routine.
Sensate and the evidence
What is Sensate?
Sensate is a palm-sized wellness device that rests on your breastbone. You pair its low-frequency vibrations with soundscapes from the Sensate app through headphones. The manufacturer markets it for relaxation and stress management. See the official Sensate product page.
How does Sensate work?
You place the device on your sternum, connect it to the app, and play a session. The device’s vibrations synchronize with the audio. Sensate describes this combination as a way to support relaxation through sound and vibration.
For a longer introduction, visit our guide to how Sensate works.
Does Sensate work, and what does the research show?
Some users report feeling calmer, and early research reports improvements in stress and sleep. One manufacturer-hosted pilot study (PDF) followed 25 adults who used Sensate each day for 14 days. Participants completed questionnaires before and after the study.
The report describes a small internal pilot with no control group. That design cannot separate the device’s effects from expectations, time set aside to relax, or other changes. Treat the findings as preliminary evidence, not proof of a guaranteed result.
Is Sensate legit, and is it a medical device?
Sensate sells a physical device with a companion app and publishes support information and research reports. That makes it a product you can evaluate against your needs, budget, and the evidence.
The manufacturer classifies Sensate as a non-medical device. Do not treat marketing claims or customer reviews as proof that it treats a health condition. Read Sensate’s medical-device guidance and our Sensate reviews page.
Is Sensate the same as electrical vagus nerve stimulation?
No. Sensate uses sound and mechanical vibration; it does not deliver electrical stimulation to your body. Medical vagus nerve stimulation involves different devices and clinical uses. Research on those treatments does not establish the same benefits for Sensate.
Read the manufacturer’s explanation of the distinction.
Can Sensate help with sleep or anxiety?
You may find a relaxation session useful while winding down before bed. Participants in the small pilot study reported sleep and anxiety improvements, but its limitations prevent firm conclusions about treatment.
Sensate does not replace care for an anxiety disorder or ongoing sleep problems. If either affects your daily life, discuss treatment options with a healthcare professional. See Sensate’s medical-device guidance.
Using the device and app
How do I use Sensate for the first time?
Rest the device on your breastbone while reclining, put on headphones, and choose a session in the Sensate app. Start with a comfortable vibration intensity. Follow the manufacturer’s quick-start and setup guidance for your device and phone.
How long is a Sensate session?
The current official Sensate product page lists sessions from 10 to 30 minutes. Begin with a short session and assess how you feel. A session length is a time commitment, not a promise that you will feel calmer by the end.
Do I need the app or a paid subscription?
You use the companion app to run the synchronized sessions. Sensate includes a foundational soundscape library with the device; a paid subscription is optional. Sensate Plus adds premium soundscapes. Check the selected package and any renewal terms before buying.
Does the Sensate app provide therapy or personal coaching?
The core experience pairs app soundscapes with the device. Do not assume that a purchase includes a therapist, a personal coach, or a clinical treatment plan. Check the exact features of your package on the official Sensate product page.
Safety and buying
Who should check before using Sensate?
The manufacturer advises against use with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker. It also says it cannot recommend use during pregnancy because it has not conducted specific testing.
Sensate has primarily tested the device with adults. Before buying for a child or using it with a medical condition, review the manufacturer’s suitability guidance and speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
What if I find the vibration uncomfortable?
Stop the session if it feels unpleasant. Do not push through discomfort or increase the intensity to chase a stronger effect. Contact Sensate support for device guidance, and ask a healthcare professional about symptoms that persist. The pilot report notes that a few participants found the vibration unpleasant or continued to feel distracted by anxious thoughts.
How much does Sensate cost?
At our September 29, 2026 check, the US store listed the device at $299 and the Plus Pack at $348. The Plus Pack included one year of Sensate Plus. Prices, offers, taxes, and package details may change; confirm the total and any subscription terms on the official Sensate product page before you pay.
Can I return Sensate if it does not suit me?
The manufacturer’s policy allows a Sensate unit return within 90 days of receipt for a refund of the merchandise value and tax. You generally pay return shipping. Import fees and duties are non-refundable, and the policy excludes US accessories from returns.
Contact Sensate for a return authorization and instructions before sending anything back. Read the current Sensate’s return policy for exceptions and full terms.
